I read Emiko Terazono and Andres Schipani’s piece (June 9) on slaughterhouses with great attention.
I wonder if the practice of slaughterhouses “is a race to the bottom”. Why don’t we let the market take its course and come to a decision about this industry?
Meat is cheap, but it shouldn’t be. For some reason, the market parameters do not seem to apply to it. If there was no public subsidy for the meat industry, much more than they need, the price of meat products would not be so affordable. We see the results now over and over again. Increase in meat consumption is found to be directly related to decrease in public health across the world.
Now, during a global pandemic, what we least need is another health crisis on top of what is already the worst health emergency of our time.
